An Inspiring Story

Last week we talked about what we look for when we guide high school students in exploring their interests and career possibilities: a spark in their eyes. Are they alive at a deep level? And are they on fire?

Today we want to share the story of Boyan Slat, who “came up with the idea of building a passive plastic catchment system, using circulating ocean currents to net plastic waste” at the age of 17.

He is now the CEO of the The Ocean Cleanup and has done incredibly inspiring work in cleaning up the oceans.

Is your teen excited and inspired about something? If so, how are you nurturing their interest?

Too much homework, too many extracurricular activities, and too much screentime can actually put a damper on the free time a student has to explore something and come up with creative ideas.

It's a delicate balancing act–how do you support a young adult in creating the free time that is so essential to relaxation and creativity while making sure they are not wasting time?

These are some of the issues we help students and families with every day. We've seen remarkable turnarounds in students who learn how to relax and focus on a deep interest. It's not easy, but the results are worth it!
